Getting The Best Out Of Solar Panels And The Factors That Affect Them

Receiving solar energy isn’t as simple as throwing up a few panels and plugging them straight into an inverter. In order to get your solar energy system to run at optimum levels you’ll need to take into account certain considerations. If you do fail to take certain factors into account, it could negatively affect the way your system performs and ultimately cost you money. Let’s take a closer look at what you can do to make sure that your solar panels do exactly what they’re supposed to do.

Pitch and orientation

Generally speaking solar panels located in the Southern hemisphere should always be located at ‘true north’. This isn’t the same as magnetic north and instead should be the true northern most point from where you’re situated. For example if you’re at 27.6 degrees south then your panels need to be facing 27.6 degrees north. In addition if your solar panel is being installed on a pitched roof, then this also needs to be taken into account.

To aid maximum performance your panels should be adjusted twice a year. During the long summer months tilt the panels lower to catch more light and during the winter months when there is less light it’s best to angle your solar panels higher.

Temperature

Believe it or not extremely hot temperatures can affect the abilities of your solar panels dramatically. High temperatures are known to increase the conducting capacity of the semiconductor. When this happens charges become balanced in the material and this ultimately lowers the electrical voltage across the cell. In some instances heat can reduce the capabilities of your solar panel by up to 25%. Cleal;y you can’t alter the temperatures directly if you live in a particularly hot climate, but what you can do is to install your solar panels on a mounting system which sits a few centimetres off the roof. This allows for air circulation, thus cooling the overall temperature within the panels by a few degrees. You can also prevent heat absorption by making sure your panels are made from light coloured materials. In addition try to keep the inverter part of the solar system in shadier areas (preferably behind the panels).

Watch for too much shade

Just as cooler temperatures can help the function of the solar panels, by contrast, if too much shade falls on the panels, particularly during peak sunshine hours, it will seriously limit your system’s ability to produce electricity. For this reason carry out shade tests before you permanently position your panels. This may involve trimming back a few trees.

Keep your panels clean

Keeping your solar panels clean isn’t purely for aesthetic reasons. It also serves a purpose. When panels are soiled with bird droppings, dirt, and debris it inhibits the panel’s ability to soak up the sunlight produced and in turn produce maximum energy. Therefore periodic checks are a good idea if you want to keep your panels running at optimum capacity.
