As summer fast approaches, it’s seriously tempting to crank up the air conditioner and position yourself in front of it. The issue is that even the latest air conditioning systems can rack up a hefty electricity bill if you’re not careful. With this in mind, here are some other cost-effective way to keep yourself cool this summer.
As simple as it sounds, keeping your blinds closed throughout the hottest part of the day makes a big difference to the temperature of your house. Did you know that on average around 30% of all heat entering a room comes from windows? Keeping blinds and/or curtains closed can actually lower your indoor temperatures by as much as 10 degrees Celsius and prevent your home from becoming a greenhouse.
Take an ice pack, or even a pack or frozen peas, place them in a bowl. Then position them in front of a common house fan. If it’s positioned at the right angle the already cooler air whips off the ice creating an extra-chilled effect to help keep yourself cool. Trust us it really does work!
How about investing in a cool-inducing Chillow to put under your head before you go to sleep. Likewise fill a hot water bottle with ice cold water and place it near you feet. Also get rid of the flannel sheets in favour of cotton ones and you might want to invest in a buckwheat pillow. Buckwheat husks naturally have a space occurring between them which won’t hold on to your body heat like conventional feather pillows do.
If you don’t have ceiling fans then you might want to get them installed. They can be used in conjunction with your A/C to maintain a certain level of cool without having to crank it up, but since we aren’t using air conditioning (well, not in this post anyway) they’re also an excellent stand alone way to keep cool.
What’s more they’re incredibly cheap to run. Do make sure that they rotate counter-clockwise as this is what creates the chilled breeze effect which helps to keep yourself cool.
Finally, one of the simplest ways to keep cool is to focus on keeping your body temperature cool and not on the house. Take regular sips of iced drinks, apply cold compresses to the neck and face area, and wear loose cotton clothing. All of these things can make you feel more comfortable in extreme heat conditions.
